Requested Features

Saturday, the 8th of August, 2009 at 6:05am
This post is really more for me than anything else, just to remind me what I need to add to this site, in terms of functionality and purpose.

Features

  • Tag additions to existing articles (Not actually Completed after all).
  • Blog Search form and results page (Completed).
  • Comments RSS feed (Completed).
  • Books RSS feed (Completed).
  • Private Messaging (Needs more work).
  • Conversion of The Land of Thud into Blog (Not started).
  • Conversion of History section into Blog (Not started).
  • Addition of blog posting "sticky" system (Not started).
  • Changes to blog posting page to allow additions to, and creation of, books (Not started).
  • CSS updates for general blog post formatting (Completed).
  • Homepage update, to mention more about our Writings section and how visitors can add their own stories. Existing books definitely need more coverage on homepage too. (Not started).
  • Addition of reCaptcha to the blog comment form (to allow guests to post comments) (Completed).[/li]
If I have missed anything, let me know in the comments and I'll add it. If you have a few other suggestions, then please comment, and I will consider them, and if possible add them to the feature list above.

I will try and get all these done before I start University this September. I'll be a full-time Software Development BSc(Hons) student for the next three years, so this could mean really big things for this site.

Formal Education > Home Education

I'll also try and update this list when things have been done.

Future Feature Ideas

  • AJAX-powered comment form with edit.
  • Members delicious linkrolls and tag clouds.
  • [li]A login form that actually remembers where you were when you logged in and redirects you back after login.

I've added my very first ajax call to these very comments, I can now delete any comment I like, and it will update the screen without reloading the page. Nice. Small steps first, big ones later.

I have also added a 'most recently edited' column on the homepage, which kind of acts a bit like a sticky system, but with a more competitive edge. It will likely be replaced with a more appropriate system later.

One small other addition for today.

1. Addition of my latest delicious bookmarks to the side panel, including a link to the RSS feed, on the Feck Off page.

A bugfix and a feature addition today (v11.0.45).

1. Bug in blog posting page caused posting to not be displayed after publishing. Fixed.
2. Addition of Book and Chapter graphical links to any blog entries that are a part of a book. Displayed next to the blog article permalink/title.

good to see you again d00d. I'm still thinking about how to turn blog entries into book chapters, as I really need to turn Data Stream into a book too, or you would be able to if you so chose. By that point, all the advanced members would be able to create books here which would automagically appear in the writings section, without any intervention required from me (although that will require adding an image upload to the blog post form (for contents pages, etc.). We would also then be able to group individual short stories into compendiums. All manner of good stuff. :)

I really do need to improve the login system for this place, it is overdue I suppose anyway. Let me know of any other issues you might discover.
