To encrypt or not to encrypt?

That is the question.

So, what do you think? Should we encrypt all private messages on this site?

Oh that's right, did I not mention? I'm building a Private Messaging system for you lucky people, and a little encouragement/discouragement may help right now.

I am planning for it to initially launch with the ability to use BBCode in the private message content, each member will have access to their own Inbox and Sent items folders, and a quoting-Reply system as well to facilitate better convo's.

Depending on database usage, I will likely delete old PMs within 6 months, if not already done so personally by the member.

do we have to decrypt them by hand using a piece of charcoal and a string of cat gut? if so, i`m in!

I was thinking of a many-way 256bit key which would require you to have a thumb drive. The message would be loaded onto the USB key, and then every week, the entire membership would meet in the Parish Pump and swap private keys for each individual message. When the key is entered, it will be verified by the sending member, after the Sunday Roast, by using their personal decryption device while plugged into a microwave. ;)

firefox usually warns when you submit twice, when using the back/forward buttons you sometimes have to click them really fast to skip over forms.

encrypton i think is good if it is done transparently; you might as well just get an ssl cert (i can get free 90 day trials of proper certs - DONT use free ca-certs they are not real certs) and make all logins ssl.

Instead of encryption for messages why not just use signed hashes - this ensures that the message has not been modified.

Algorithms, i would never use rsa or SSL1; dsa or SSL2 are preferable.
blowfish and variants are cool - 512 bit.

ps i really like blowfish, im going to use it in a future project. would be great if you wanted to use the same, we could share code; the mail could be a pacer because of light server load; my project involves real-time encryption and maybe heavy, needing an optimised script.

Yeah, sod encryption. Any PMs on this board can't be that sensitive that you wouldn't want me seeing it if I happen to be perusing the database.

Never tried Blowfish, but have heard some very basic info on it, in that it is an encryption algorithm generator.
